This is a very quick history, and mostly from memory, so take it all with a grain of salt and try to verify what you can from other sources. However, every attempt has been made to provide only verifiable and true information, in an attempt to set the record straight and dispell some modern “myths” about Ibanez model guitars. They were not forgeries, as they were never sold with misleading logos or with the intent to deceive. Due to their high quality, Ibanez guitars and those made under other brands, such as Greco and Aria, quickly earned a reputation around the world as quality instruments at a great value. There is a form of urban legend that circulates in the guitar community that has many variations, but usually involves either Gibson or Fender suing Ibanez, Aria, or some other Japanese manufacturer, with the intent to stop that company from manufacturing superior copies. The truth is less glamourous. Only one company ever sued another, and it was Norlin the owner of the Gibson brand at the time suing Hoshino owner of the Ibanez brand and the suit was focused only on the “open book” headstock shape common to Gibson guitars and replicated on the Ibanez guitars. The suit was brought in , but by then Ibanez had already changed the headstock shape on its copy models, so the suit was settled out of court. No other company was ever sued by any other company.

Tweet on Twitter Ca. Among the major players in the American market were the many importers and distributors who enriched the guitar landscape with instruments — usually at the lower ends of the market brought in from other countries, primarily from Europe, Asia, and to a lesser extent, Latin America. The analogy with automobiles is obvious. Univox was one of the first brands to make copies, and the brand achieved a fair amount of national visibility and distribution.
Univox was not, as you might guess, just another isolated Japanese import, but was part of a much larger story of its importer, the Merson company. Unfortunately, not many reference materials are available to document in complete detail, but we can hit some of the highlights, and illuminate a number of relationships along the way. If you have catalogs, ads or pictures of guitars that can help fill in some of the blanks, please let me know Michael Wright, PO Box , Philadelphia, PA Tempo Merson was a distribution organization founded by a man named Bernie Mersky.
At some point, Merson was taken over by Ernie Briefel. The Merson Tempo was an auditorium-sized archtop with a glued-in neck, a harrow center-peaked head which looks almost Kay. The guitar was finished in a shaded mahogany with a pair of widely separated white lines around the edges. Available source material is hard to see, but these appear not to have any soundholes.
The fingerboard was probably rosewood with four dots beginning at the fifth fret. The cabinet was covered in two-tone leatherette.

These final adjustments failed to save the Standard, however, and after the single cutaway Les Paul was replaced by the thin-bodied double-cutaway SG. A fretless option was available for basses. Otherwise the electronics were the same as the Shark and Nightwatch guitars. The Les Paul returned to the Gibson catalog in Most hollowbody Epiphone electrics bring less than the equivalent Gibson models. In addition, the electronics on New York Epiphones are not as sonically good as compared to Gibson of the same period or to the later Gibson-made Epiphones. Modernization[ edit ] In the late 50s, McCarty knew that Gibson was seen as a traditional company and began an effort to create more modern guitars.
Now, a emancipated muster was beat. Needless in size to the moment-body Thinlines, the ES summary had a unpretentious center, giving the essential tone a easier sustain. Gibson Custom Gibson Custom Guitars The only thing better than a six-string made by Gibson is a guitar from their custom line up. Re-designs of the classics, the guitars in this section are Gibson’s cream of the crop, and their specifications and looks mirror the models they created back in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Gibson can make your dream of owning a vintage-inspired guitar a reality with their stellar line-up of custom guitars, and this catalogue has plenty to choose from.
The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, which was nearly identical to the Standard with the exception of mini-humbucker pickups, was produced during this time. Further, beginning in , Gibson began offering the Les Paul Deluxe with a special order of full-size humbuckers.
Today we are looking at a lovely s vintage Ibanez guitar. And from the pictures you can see why: A good copy, with one major cost-cutting difference: Other than that, this Ibanez is spot-on. It has a mahogany body and a maple top, finished in its original gorgeous cherryburst, with full body and neck binding. The front has only a couple of very tiny surface scratches. The back of the guitar is also in great condition with minimal worming and surface nicks.
The binding and edges are in great shape. The neck is a dream to me. It is a 3-piece laminated bolt on neck with the lawsuit headstock. There little fret wear, and the neck is nice and straight with just the right relief for a low action with the strings I had on it. The ebony fretboard is a nice bonus. The hardware is in good shape.

It was my first electric guitar, and what a great guitar to learn how to play. I bought it from an individual in the early 80’s. If you want that Jimmy Page sound, this is the one. All original parts, except for the plug mount. I replaced the plastic cover with a metal plate. The original plastic cover is included.
Gibson L6-S Custom – Its the best damn guitar you ever played () This early advert for the L-6S was printed when the guitar was at it’s peak. was the only year with reasonable sales, despite the high profile endorsement of Carlos Santana, Al DiMeola and oth.
I also intend to eventually add a comprehensive “case candy” section to exhibit the documentation common to all instruments of this era. It will be in the “Period Literature” section. All case variants are common to all models Standard, Deluxe, Custom. Information on cases is contained in the “Case Guide”. Although please people, don’t start routing your guitars! They are pretty inconsistent, but generally could be considered larger-than-typical, 60’s Gibson necks.
Some 68 owners have reported that their necks are nearly identical to mid ‘s Customs that they own. I have also encountered direct comparisons to the mid-sized neck shape. The heal shape is not quite the same as it is more of a D shape than a 50’s C. Believe it or not, there are some baseball bat huge necks that left the plant in this era, but they are the exception and not the norm.

A Gibson Les Paul, SG, ES and many other guitars use a two-pickup/four-pot setup: two dedicated volume controls and two dedicated tone controls. The tonal possibilities are almost endless if you know how to dial it in right, and the tireless tinkerers among us have tried several ways of hooking.
But, by the time Kiss began performing shows, in support of their 1st release, Ace was primarily using a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a watt Marshall, as he mentioned in the quote above. That first Les Paul was a beautiful Gibson Les Paul Deluxe in a Tobacco Sunburst finish, which Ace used almost exclusively with a couple of other guitars , right up until September of As with any Les Paul Deluxe of the period, this particular guitar would have originally had mini-Humbucker pickups and creme plastics.
By the time Ace acquired it from Manny’s Music, in late , it already had it’s mini-Humbuckers swapped out for a set of full sized Humbuckers. This was a very common practise of guitars players in the early s, who wanted their guitars to look and sound like those of their heros, from the UK, who were typically using the much revered Les Pauls. Ace’s Les Paul Deluxe started it’s life with him, with creme colored plastics and ‘normal-sized’ humbucking pickups with chrome covers.

The guitar was bought by Philips in the early ‘s, and stayed in his possession until selling it two years ago. In addition to his musical chops, Philips is a skilled guitar builder and restorer, and beautifully modified the otherwise huge neck of this guitar at some point in the guitars past. The workmanship is very fine, and unless you were experienced in how massive the necks were on mid ‘s Gibson guitars, you’d likely not have noticed that the neck was ever carved at all.
The shape of the neck is akin to a 50’s Gibson — round and just full enough — and the guitar is incredibly comfortable to hold. The newer finish blends in with the old very well. There appears to be a minor repair to the side of the headstock, but without speaking to Mr.
